Online Counselling

What is online counselling?

Due to circumstances associated with Coronavirus and the government’s advice on continued social distancing, I am offering counselling online too.

Online counselling provides an opportunity to explore a personal difficulty in a confidential and supportive environment. This may include expressing feelings that are painful, and which many of us experience at certain times in our lives. When this happens, it can be difficult to stay positive and cope with everyday life. Online counselling gives you the opportunity to access counselling support at a time and in a place which is convenient to you.

What sort of issues can you contact me about?

Online counselling may be able to help with a wide range of issues including anxiety, stress, depression, eating difficulties, loneliness, relationship problems, bereavement, self-esteem and many more. Not all types of issues can be addressed through online counselling and I will advise you if face to face counselling or some other form of support might be more suitable for you. Where I consider that online counselling would not be the most suitable means of support, I will make every effort to assist you in a referral to a suitable alternative source of support. I am not able to provide online counselling to any person who is under the age of 18. If this applies to you, I can help with information on referral to other agencies providing face to face counselling services or online work which is specifically directed to a younger age group.

What are the benefits of online counselling?

Some things you may enjoy about therapy online or via telephone are:

  • You can create a comfortable and private space in your own home environment from which to attend counselling.
  • You may find it easier to talk, focus and express yourself.
  • You may enjoy wearing comfortable clothes and avoiding a commute after a therapy session.
  • We may be able to be more flexible about scheduling, as there is no travel time to get to face to face therapy and associated travel cost too.
  • We will be able to continue our work together despite any changes as a result of the COVID – 19.
  • Research shows that online/telephone therapy is as effective as in-person therapy.
  • For those who may suffer from a disability, it can often be challenging for you to get to a therapist office, whereas online counselling you can do it where you want and where you feel relaxed, so you’re not stressed at any point. Some who may suffer from anxiety or agoraphobia may find online counselling a lot more accessible.

How do we connect?

I use Zoom which is a secure platform. You will be sent a link to join a meeting by email, prior to our session, and you can access zoom via desktop/laptop, by phone or tablet. It’s simple to use. I will send you over a link and you connect to the call I will host. The software is free to use.

We will agree an appointment time. This could be weekly or fortnightly online via the [Zoom] videoconferencing platform.  You will need a camera and headphones (to reduce any background noise for you) so that we can see and hear each other. Although Zoom has the facility to record sessions, this feature will not be used by either of us.
